The technique in this film draws on the sinister behavior of the sentient beings keeping mankind enslaved in a prison for the mind. ![]() Science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mystery thrillers, utilize lighting to accentuate the mood of the scenes in a dramatic way (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, section 6.4). The low-key technique fits well with the fantasy science fiction genre by using the lighting to convey dramatic scenes. This technique helps accentuate the dark mystery surrounding the matrix and just how deep the rabbit hole goes. Low-key lighting draws upon these themes throughout the film. The events leading up to the extraction of Neo from the matrix, and throughout the plot, are surrounded by symbolism and references to Alice in Wonderland for instance, a white rabbit tattoo on a woman’s back, whom Neo is to follow or dialogue such as Morpheus stating “You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Additionally, events leading up to this meeting with Neo and Morpheus, and ultimately unplugging from the matrix, plays out on a dark and stormy night with thunder and lightning crackling in the background. Indeed, this is a dramatic scene whereby, Neo, meets the mysterious Morpheus for the first time and is about to find the sinister truth regarding the matrix. ![]() The benefits of using the low-key lighting technique in this theme allows for a foreboding mood as Neo is about to find the answer he has been looking for: What is The Matrix?
